Sam Poh Tong Temple is a well-known cave temple located in Gunung Rapat, about 5 km south of Ipoh, a heritage town in Perak. It is believed to be the biggest cave temple in Malaysia, and is a remarkable piece of art with various statues of Buddha distributed among the stalactites and stalagmites. Legendary once told that, a monk from China who was passing through Ipoh discovered the cave, back in 1890; he was then decided to make the cave as his shelter and a place for meditation purposes. He stayed there in the cave for 20 years until the end of his life. Till today, nuns and monks who worship their lives to Buddha still occupy the Sam Poh Tong. The present temple facade dates back to the 1950s and a stiff climb of 246 steps will lead you to an open cave with an excellent view of Ipoh and its surroundings. Other attractions at the temple include a beautiful Japanese pond full of Japanese carps and tortoises, which are symbols of longevity. Within the temple, visitors can discover the artistic works of man and nature. You also can gaze the beautifully carved statues of Buddha in various forms that sit in between amazing stalactites and stalagmites. The operating hours for the temple is starting from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm daily and you can enter the temple for free.
Sam Poh Tong Temple is approximately 10 minutes drive from Ipoh town, heading towards south of Ipoh. Note that the main road heading to the temple is Jalan Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah. If you are traveling by public transportation, you can take Bus No. 66 from the bus station in the town centre. Do not confuse yourself; as you will pass through 2 others temples before reaching Sam Poh Tong Temple.
Walk around the temple to embrace the beauty of the art. There is a Japanese pond where you can feed the carps and tortoise with stalks of vegetables. Located near the Japanese pond, you can find a wishing well. Time to wish for better fortunes! Why not try to be a vegan for one day, there is a vegetarian restaurant to try out, just outside the temple.
