A Chinese Buddhist temple built within a limestone cave, Sam Poh Tong is a popular attraction in Gunung Rapat which is about five kilometres south of Ipoh town. Being the oldest and the biggest cave temple in the country, Sam Poh Tong is definitely a majestic work of art with various statues of Buddha being placed among the stalactites and stalagmite. Legends say that the cave was discovered in 1890 by a monk from China who was passing through Ipoh who decided to make it his home and a place for meditation. He stayed twenty years later till his death, while the legacy runs strong today within the monks and nuns dedicating themselves to the temple.
