The then old Istana Negara was the former residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme King) of Malaysia. It stands on a 13-acre site, located on a commanding position on the slope of a hill of Bukit Petaling overlooking the Klang River, along Jalan Syed Putra. It was replaced by the new Istana Negara, located along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim in Segambut, northwestern Kuala Lumpur in 2011.

With this transition, since 2013, referred as “Old Istana Negara”, the royal mansion has been converted into the Royal Museum.

Historically, this palace was originally a double-storey mansion called ‘The Big House’ built in 1928 by a local Chinese millionaire, Chan Wing. During the Japanese occupation, it was used as the residence of the Japanese Governor. The British Military Administration then took over right after the Japanese surrender in 1945. When the Federation of Malaya was formed in 1950, the Selangor State Government rented the residence up until the Year of Independence, 1957. In 1957, the owners sold the property to the Federal Government.

The charm of any national palace is the changing of guards event. Here, two guards in Malay traditional attire are being stationed at the main gateway of the Old Istana Negara and the changing event ceremony are performed at 12 o’clock noon daily at the palace grounds.

You may reach the Old Istana Negara by hailing a taxi. Other transport options would be to rent a car, scooter or a motorbike.
