    Singapore Management University or shortly known as SMU is an autonomous university located in Singapore. The university carries out an American-style education following Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. SMU was established in the year 2000 its main campus now located in the districts of Bras Basah, Singapore. Around 10,000 undergraduate students and postgraduates students enrol in the university all-year round. The city campus comprises of six schools offering undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs in Business Administration, Business Analytics, Financial Services, Accountancy, Economics, Information Systems Management, Law and Social Sciences. SMU also has a total of over 30 research institutes and centres of excellence for individuals through the university’s professional and executive development programs.

    Singapore Management University was first located in the former Raffles College on Evans Road near Hwa Chong Institution Campus in the year 2000. It was first opened in 1929 and was home to several institutions before SMU came into the establishment. In 2001, the university was upgraded and was placed in the main campus facilities, with its campus still preserving the colonial era architecture. After five years operating in Bukit Timah, the university then moved to its current and permanent location in the city campus in Bras Basah, featuring the original four schools, library and three centres of excellence. Since then, the university has expanded and developed, giving way to the establishment of the Law school in 2007 and the School of Economics as well as the School of Social Sciences.

    How to Get There

    By MRT

    Two nearby MRT stations are surrounding Singapore Management University campus, both of which are accessible on foot and are also nearby several hotels and tourist attractions. Located in Bencoolen, directly opposite Strand Hotel Singapore is the Bencoolen MRT Station (DT21). This station is near the School of Information Systems. The other station is located near City Hall (EW13/NS25), and it is the nearest to Lee Kong Chian School of Business.

    By Bus

    Buses are the most common public transportation in Singapore, provided by two operators; SBS Transit and SMRT. To get to Singapore Management University, you can hail a bus at main bus transit stations and get down at several stations surrounding the area of the city campus. You can drop down either at Bencoolen where there are two stations, then one station is in front of the School of Information System, and the other is situated right in front of Lee Kong Chian School of Business. Bus fares range from SGD67 cents to SGD1.58.

    Taxi is not the primary mean of public transportation as they are metered and can be slightly more expensive than the prior two options. However, it is best used to get to your destination easily without having to walk or figure out which route to take. Nonetheless, customers are guaranteed a fixed fare as all taxis are metered.
