Hotels near St Michael and All Angels Church

One of the oldest buildings is St. Michael’s and All Angels Church situated at Elton Hill and this beautiful granite church was built in 1893 and took 30 years to complete. Designed by New Zealander, Mr. B. W. Mountfort, the church was constructed with stones taken from Buli Sim Sim and the white stones that adorn the windows and doors were from Hong Kong. St. Michael’s and All Angels Church was one of Sabah’s few surviving pre-warstone building and was recognized as one of the world’s heritage since 2005. The beautiful stained glass windows in the church were donated by Australians to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Church was also one of the many places where the Prisoners of War who trekked the Sandakan Death March spent a night before continuing the march. How to Get There

There are flights such as Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines and Malindo Air that fly from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan which takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes. From Sandakan Airport, you can take taxi or rent a car to St Michael and All Angels Church which will take around 6 minutes by using Puncak road. The Church is part of the Sandakan Heritage Trail. Alternatively, you can also take a taxi from Sandakan town. It is recommended that you make return arrangements with your taxi driver as public transport is not readily available in this area.

Agnes Keith House

Situated at a hill at Jalan Istana overlooking Sandakan Bay, it was a home of Conservator of Forests, Harry Keith and his American wife, Agnes Keith, a writer, from the 1930s until 1942. Today the restored house has been turned into a heritage house and furnished with colonial furniture and antiques. A gallery on the first floor tells the story of this remarkable woman, her books and her family. The opening hours for this place are seven days a week (Monday - Sunday) which open from 9am to 5pm.

Central Market

The Central Market is where the locals and international visitors come to buy fresh produce, fruits, delicacies and crafts, sarongs and seashells. There are also stalls selling shirts, shoes, bags & local handicraft such as crystal and pearl accessories on the second level of this building. The fish market here is perhaps the biggest and busiest in Sabah which offers a stunning array of fresh seafood and frozen seafood to be packed and sell to people. They can pack your selected seafood in a box safe to carry in airplane or car.

The Crocodile Farm

The Sandakan Crocodile Farm is located 12 kilometres which takes around 30 minutes from Sandakan town. . Crocodiles are farmed for their skins as crocodile leather can be made into goods such as wallets, briefcases, purses, handbags, belts, hats, and shoes. It is Malaysia's largest farm with over 3000 of the reptiles in concrete pools. The crocodiles in this farm came originally in the wild found along the Kinabatangan River. Besides offering visitors an up-close look at Sabah's biggest reptiles, the farm also hold other attractions as well including crocodile and snake shows. It also features a mini zoo with a 100kg Amazonian fish, and a children's park.
