Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum is also known as Baba & Nyonya House Museum. It is a museum in the city of Melaka, Malaysia. It is a place where old housing area used by the Baba and Nyonya are turned into exhibitions that showcases the local history of ethnic Chinese – Malays. These communities are the one called Baba and Nyonya or Peranakan in Melaka.

The house of the Peranakan was established in 1986 by Chan Kim Lay who is the fourth generation of his family to reside in the large house. The house was actually built by his great grandfather in 1896. It was built in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. Some also call the street as ‘Millionaire’s Row’ due to the many luxurious houses built here.

House no 48 and 50 used to be the main homestead while house no 52 was the servant’s quarters. The interior is highly influenced by Dutch, Portuguese, Malay and Colonial. The furniture also is made of Lavish Blackwood with pearl and marble. There are embroideries with Chinese symbols. There are many more Chinese influences in the décor of the house. The house also has the reception hall, kitchen as well as ancestral hall included.

How to Get There

By Car

From Kuala Lumpur, one may take the North – South Expressway and head to Ayer Keroh. By taking Ayer Keroh exit, one should be able to see sign boards heading towards the Museum. It will take around 2 hours to drive there. The distance is 144.5 kilometres.

By Bus

One may take a bus to Melaka. There are many busses from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan. Some of the companies that go to Melaka are Mayang Sari Express, KKKL Sdn Bhd and also Kejora Express. It will stop at Melaka Central Bus Terminal. The fee would be RM11 to RM 18.40. From the bus terminal, one needs to take a taxi to go to the museum.
