Batang Padang located approximately 116 km, towards the south of Ipoh and about 94 km to the west of Teluk Intan. Batang Padang District is a district located in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Batang Padang includes Tapah, Kampar, Bidor, Mambang Diawan and so on. Administrative offices are located in the town of Tapah. Tapah can be divided into Tapah and Tapah Road. Sungai Batang Padang spread across Tapah town, next to the Mosque of Tapah. “Batang” means river in Orang Asli native language. The origin of the Batang Padang name stems from old folks story that there is a big tree that spans across the field.
According to the legendary, 7 miles farther upstream Sungai Batang Padang, there is an area or field that is so wide, which is about 5 acres. It is believe that a young boy was affected to a rare skin disease after he chopped the tree to death. A young man later, who also afflicted the tree, also notching ultimate misfortune just like the boy. Then the villagers have to fence off the tree. The villagers at that time believe in superstitions, they believed that the tree was sacred. Not long after, the tree fallen across the river.
In another different story, during heavy rain, the Sungai Batang Padang will overflow water and caused floods. The overflow river often carries tree trunks, and when receding; many tree trunks washed ashore on the mainland. For indigenous people, Batang Padang means open space or bare ground without trees. The natives believe that, the name originated from the story of an ape that has been rescued alive, by a resident of the village, thousands of years ago. Because of the incident, the Guardian of Environment has ordered lightning, hot water and even dragons to penalize residents who have lived in the village. All things that are in its path, including the village was destroyed and part of the forest in the area. The situation is like a village 'lifeless field'. That is the story of how the river got its name.
