Pekan is one of the districts in Pahang, Malaysia. It is located on the banks of the Pahang River for 50 km south Kuantan. It is also known as the Royal Town of Pahang. The name of Pekan has been derived from a local type of flower named as Bunga Pekan which used to grow wild along the Pahang River banks.

Pekan has 11 mukims which are Bebar, Temai, Lepar, Kuala Pahang, Langgar, Ganchong, Pahang Tua, Pulau Manis, Pulau Rusa and Peyor.

How to Get There

By Car

There are a lot of suggestions given depending on the starting point you are travelling from.

If you are travelling from Kuala Lumpur, you can go to Pekan via the East Coast Expressway by taking the exit to Gambang Interchange to the Tun Razak Highway. The travelling is estimated to be 3 hours of journey.

If you are travelling from Johor, you may take the road which passes through Kuala Rompin and you can enjoy a scenic view along the road. You will be directed to take the Tun Razak Highway too which also have been linked between Kuantan and Segamat.

By Bus

You can take a bus from Pudu Raya Central Bus Station, Kuala Lumpur which does have a daily trip to Pekan from Kuala Lumpur and vice versa. The journey would be the same as driving a car due to the route is similar. Approximately the journey will take up to 3 hours of travelling time.

Sultan Abu Bakar Museum

This museum has many kinds of artefacts being displayed here which associated to the importance of the nation's' history. The museum has been opened since 1976 in a 1920s British residence. This museum had previously expanded its collections of artefacts has gained the interests of the locals. There have been contributions made by the locals where they had found a Malay dagger called keris in a river. This keris has drawn a lot of attention by other locals who had associated the keris with mystical ability.

The Chiefs' Rest House

This rest house is a wooden structure which was completely built on 1926 and had been featured in Lonely Planet Travel Guide as a must-visit site in Pekan. It was initially built by the British to use it as a guest house for their Chieftains when attending meetings or events at the Istana. This guest house as per current still offers as a guest house providing clean and reasonable rooms for the travellers.

You may try to stay at the nostalgic guest house as such.

Pantai Lagenda

This beach is located 15 minutes from Pekan to the north way of Kuantan. This beach also featured a golf course. You can still enjoy the view of the beach while walking along the beach stretch while relaxing on taking the stroll.

Lake Chini

This lake is only one hour drive away from the Pekan town. It is the second largest lake in Malaysia and it is included of 12 different lakes. It is established as one of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve statuses sites. This lake is commonly known to be inhabited by the Orang Asli, the native of this area, which also will give you a real experience of the natives. There is also a resort and restaurant offered to you while staying there. Boat trips are available and the prices are according to the chosen route.
