About

Kuala Rompin is a sub-district in the district of Rompin, Pahang. The most southeast part of Pahang, located on the South-East coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It also faces the South China Sea. It borders with the state of Johor and covers an area of more than 4,000km2, including the Tioman Island.

The name Rompin was thought to be originated from the Rhu tree that said to be leaning and slim (ramping – in the local language, Malay). The combination of Rhu and ramping resulted in ‘rumping’ and later, the locals called in as Rompin.

Being a town that located along the coast, the main activities here would definitely include the sea. Fishing is the main activity and seafood is their speciality. Along the coast, there are a lot of restaurants specialized in seafood, especially squids, prawns and even crabs apart from variety choices of fishes. Giant prawns or udang galah is most abundant in Kuala Rompin. Don’t forget to get a taste of it in the village of Leban Chondong that is famous of their delicious, fresh prawn dishes and at cheaper price than any other places in Malaysia.

How to Get There

From Kuala Lumpur, it is about 4 hours’ drive, or about a couple of hours from Pahang capital, Kuantan. There is also a bus service from the KL to Kuala Rompin at price of RM 30+ per person.

Pulau Tioman

The main attraction in Kuala Rompin is definitely a trip to this beautiful, picturesque island that is located just 32 km off coast of Rompin. It is densely forested island, with eight main villages on it. There are resorts and chalets to accommodate visitors that come to the island. The island also has a duty-free status, meaning the prices there are cheaper than in the main land of Malaysia. The island is a scuba diving spot, covered with numerous, colourful coral reefs. There is a small airport on the island, Tioman Airport that chartered by the Berjaya Air that flew from KL and Singapore daily at reasonable price. Do give a call to book a seat and get discounted price on your way to explore the island.

Sailfish

Other than Tioman Island, Kuala Rompin is also popular with sailfish-related activities. Sailfish fishing is the most popular sport and Kuala Rompin is being recognized as the Sailfish Capital of Asia, not to mention that it also hosts a yearly world-class fishing event, the Royal Pahang International Billfish Challenge.
