About

Tanah Merah Railway Station is a landmark of commuter train station situated inside the town and district of Tanah Merah in the state of Kelantan, which is an hour away from the state capital Kota Bharu. It forms part of the KTM Komuter East Coast Line route operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM), being one of the two minor stations along the line. It is the fourth final station of the Gemas-Tumpat route and is the sole station serving Tanah Merah.

Due to its close proximity to the town area, it is easily found when coursing through Jalan Pasir Mas โ€“ Tanah Merah alongside other facilities such as banks, shops, restaurants, schools, government offices, fire department, mosques, post offices and many more. It is also more prone to floods in comparison to other stations, considering the town area of Tanah Merah too gets flooded easily when the monsoon season comes.

Named after the Tanah Merah area itself, this station has a long history, where it was built around 1914 during the time when the state of Kelantan is considered one of the British protected states called as Unfederated Malay States. This station has a two island platform train design, with tickets available for purchase at the ticket counters.

Tourist Attraction

Guillemard Bridge

The Guillemard Bridge or also known as the Kelantan River Railway Bridge is a single track railway truss bridge located in Kusial, which is just about twenty minutes away from the landmark. Being two of the oldest railway bridges in the country after Victoria Bridge in Perak, the bridge was constructed between May 1920 and July 1924 by The Metro Carriage Wagon & Finance Company Limited which was based in Wednesbury, England. Officiated in 1925 by the late Almarhum Sultan Muhammad IV of Kelantan, the bridge was named after Sir Laurence Guillemard who was the British Governor for the Straits Settlements. Initially used as a crossing over the Kelantan River, the bridge was used by all vehicles until Tanah Merah Bridge completed its build in February 1988. Nonetheless the bridge still stands till this day even after a century has passed, being an engineering marvel and historical site all at once.
