Sibu was a small village with several shop-houses. The earliest inhabitants of Sibu were Melanau people, followed by Ibans, and Malay people in the 1850s. In 1853, Sarawak has expanded its territory to include Sibu region after obtaining the territory from the Bruneian Empire.

With population approximately 200 000, Sibu is an inland town at the central region of Sarawak. Located at the confluence of the Rajang and Igan Rivers, the town covers an area of 129.5 square kilometres (50.0 sq mi). Today, Sibu is mainly dominated by Chinese especially the Fuzhou people, followed by other ethnic groups such as indigenous Melanau, Malay, and Iban.

Famous for being the hometown of a national patriot, Rosli Dhoby, some of the well known local signature dish include Kompia and Kampua. This thriving modern town is quipped with excellent road, air and river transportation link, it is also the ideal jumping-off point for exploring Sarawak. From Kuching, Sibu can be reached by air plane (40 minutes flight), by bus (half a day) or by boat by boat (5.5 hours).

Sibu Central Market

Prepare to be awed by the vast span of stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits and live poultry. Known as the largest indoor market in Malaysia, is located along Jalan Channel opposite the Express Boat Passenger Terminal. Some of the highlights at this market include Iban ladies selling exotic fruits, jungle produce and handicrafts, and Chinese poultry sellers who offer their live chickens and ducks neatly wrapped up in tubes fashioned from old newspapers.

Tua Pek Kong Temple

Tua Pek Kong Temple is the oldest and best-preserved Chinese temple in Sibu. Ages more than 100 years old, there is a 7-storey Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) Pagoda which was constructed in 1987. People come to this temple to enjoy spectacular views of Rejang river and Sibu Waterfront, especially during sunset.

Sibu Heritage Centre

Housed in former Sibu Municipal Council building, Sibu Heritage Centre in located along Jalan Central Sibu. It displays the rich cultural heritage of various ethnic groups including the history of early Chinese migrants from various dialect groups and ethnic tribes. The entrance of the museum is free and it is opened daily 8 am to 5 pm.
