Kinta Tin Mining Museum is also known as Kinta Tin Mining (Gravel Pump) Museum. It is located in Kampar, which, as part of Perak’s Kinta Valley. It was an important tin mining centre from the late 1880s, through its heyday in the 1920s, up until the 1970s by which time production was in decline. Malaysia was the world’s leading tin producer and tin mining is featured in a number of museums around the country, such as Sungai Lembing Museum and Han Chin Pet Soo Museum. This museum in Kampar focuses on the gravel pump method of extraction.
A glance at the map will show that the area surrounding Kampar is pockmarked with dozens of small lakes left over from tin mining activity. The mining pits were not in a good condition at the time but now that mining has stopped and nature has worked its miracles, the lakes serve as attractive spots for housing developments, nature reserves, duck farms and so on. The museum was opened in 2012 and was the inspiration of businessman Tan Sri Hew See Tong, himself a former tin miner. The museum opens from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on weekdays and from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on the weekend and Public Holidays. Admission is free.
There are daily intercity bus services. The Kinta Omnibus runs between Kampar, Kota Baru Estate, Batu Gajah, Gopeng and the Ipoh Bus Station at Medan Kidd. There is only one known public bus commuter service in Gopeng. Express bus services from various locations will generally pick and drop passengers in Gopeng, many of these express buses are en route to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Penang to the north. Taxi services are also available in Gopeng, they are stationed at the Gopeng Bus Station.
