The Desaru Beach is a coastal resort area in Southeastern Johor in Peninsular Malaysia. The small town of Bandar Penawar, about 2 km inland, serves as the area’s transport hub. In the early 80s, the Desaru Beach has been identified as designated land to be developed for tourist attraction. However, it has been abandoned for quite a while. In 2011, with the opening of the new expressway, the Desaru Beach once again sparks a comeback whereby its feature of true Malay resort that comes with simple, no over the top frills become popular.

The Desaru Beach is highly seasonal with wet climate and it experiences heavy rains with monsoon winds in between November and February. Thus, the fair season for a visit is in between April to October, with June to August being the busiest months.

At certain parts of the beach, the waves are almost constantly high and suitable for surfing. Furthermore, it is an attractive location considering the lack of jellyfish or sharks.

A visit to Desaru Fruit Farm is quite amazing where one gets to know nearly 100 cultivars of fruit and there is also a mini zoo to entertain young children. Another family friendly spot is the Ostrich Wonderland, a place that cares for almost 300 ostriches. Have a taste of ostrich’ meat and a dish of its enormous egg. It is also quite a challenge to experience riding an ostrich.
