About

According to the history, the name Wakaf Bharu was derived from a small hut that was built in between the routes to Kota Bharu enabling the travellers on foot to have a shelter or transit before continuing their journey towards Kota Bharu. As during that time there is no other means of transport, the wakaf or small hut becomes a pleasant place that accommodates the travellers to stop by and take some rest. Not so long after that, there came a railway station. The wakaf stays as it is despite the new environment. Combination of the old wakaf function and the new or ‘baru’ environment had the people to name the place as ‘Wakaf Bharu’. Nowadays, Wakaf Bharu usually is crowded on a Friday due to the well set-up of a ‘Friday Market’ that sells consumer goods, fresh produce, foodstuff and local wares.
