According to history, there was a river in Kulai where there are many types of fishes and also countless turtle and tortoise as well as other sea creatures. During the heavy rain at the river before Chinese New Year, river levels can be as high as five to six feet. The villagers who live near the river must move to higher area and after the rain, the villagers would clean up the house. It was found that hundreds of tortoise climb toward the shore then the villagers would loudly shout “tortoise” and “Turtle” Later, because “turtle come” in Mandarin word hard to pronounce and villagers eventually call Kulai. The river also has been changed to the name Kulai River.

The Kulai District is a district in the state of Johor which covers Kulai Town, Ayer Bemban, Bandar Putra Kulai, Bukit Batu, Indahpura, Kangkar Pulai, Kelapa Sawit, Saleng, Sedenak, Seelong, Senai and Sengkang and Taman Putri. The Masjid Jamek is located within Kulai town and serves the needs of the Muslim townfolks. There are a few Chinese temples and churches serving the needs of the Chinese community. The chinese Taoist temples include the "Thousand Fairies" Temple is located along the old trunk road and the "Seven Sisters" temple as well as other smaller temples are around the town.

The main language is Malay with Johorean dialect and most of the Chinese community in Kulai mainly speak Hakka Chinese dialects. They also use English and Tamil language to local residents here and international tourists.

By Car

It usually takes 3 hours and 10 minutes to reach Kulai via North South Highway from Kuala Lumur city centre by car or taxi.

By Plane

From Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Senai International Airport, it takes 45 minutes by using available flights such as AirAsia, Firefly and Malindo Air. Once you reach Senai Airport, you can rent a car or take taxi for another 20 minutes by using Jalan Lapangan terbang.

Upside Down Warm House is located 10 minutes away from Kulai town via Jalan Besar and nearby IOI Mall. Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest

Gunung Pulai is situated around 24 minutes from Kulai town and measured approximately 654 metres high hill near the city of Johor Bahru. Mount Pulai stands about 700 metres above sea level and it is the nearest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia which you can visit from Singapore. This place contains substantial primary rainforest cover since it is a water catchment area for nearby Johor Bahru and Singapore, and it also has a spectacular waterfall. It is nearby along the road and passing oil palm estates until you reach a village called Kampung Sri Gunung Pulai and a military base. There are wild animals such as monkeys, lizards and wild birds. This place is open every day and admission free.
