Tuaran is a town and district with a size of 1166 square kilometres. It is situated in West Coast Divisin of Sabah, Malaysia. It is situated 34 kilometres north of the state capital, Kota Kinabalu with its strategic location linking Kota Kinabalu with the north area of Sabah. Approximately half of the locals who stay in Tuaran are mostly Dusuns, one of the ethnic existed in the Borneo, and the other half are mostly Malaysian Chinese,Hakka, subgroup.

How to Get There

There are several of modes of transport to get to Tuaran. There are domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur which is being offered by most of domestic airlines such as AirAsia, Malindo Air and Malaysia Airlines. When reached at the airport, you can take taxi to get to Tuaran with affordable prices and the journey would only takes up for approximately 1 hour to reach there.

You may also rent on car rentals for your journey to Tuaran. It will approximately charge for MYR50 per day depending on your car model. This type of mode would give you more freedom of choice when you can decide the time and places where you want to go. By this, you can plan out your itinerary to when you have reached Tuaran.

There are also chartered busses that will take you from the airport to Tuaran. The journey will take as the same as driving a car as the route to Tuaran used are the same. Buses route can be found at the information centre in the airport.

Tourist Attractions

Pagoda San Liang Tuaran

This pagoda was built in the middle of 90’s. This 10 stories tall structure cost about MYR 5 million and took some time to complete its built. You can also climb inside the pagoda and enjoy the view of Sabah from the topmost floor. The view is breath-takingly beautiful with the whole shot of the north Sabah is covered where at the west side, you can view the most of Tuaran town and at the east side, you would be able to see the grandiosity of Mount Kinabalu.

Tuaran Crocodile Farm

This place inhabits hundreds of crocodiles from different species. This place is located only 32 kilometres away from Kota Kinabalu city. Instead of watching hundreds of crocodiles, you can also enjoy to watch the crocodile shows, cultural show and mini zoo that are also featured in the farm. The infamous type of crocodile inhabit the zoo is the Crocodylus Porosus or in Malay is called buaya tembaga, a salt water crocodile which can live in fresh and salt water.

Tuaran Sunday Market

This market is open from 5:00AM – 1:00PM, where you can find all sorts of things here. It is best for you to go this market before 11AM to avoid the heat when walking around the market. From here, you can experience the local culture and blend in with the locals observing their daily routines.

Tuaran Upside Down House (Rumah Terbalik)

This is the first Upside Down House ever built in Malaysia. This house’s extraordinary features have attracted a lot of people including the tourists and locals to come by and visit the how the house was built. The illusion of being upside down is a foreign feeling for those visitors and would definitely take many photos for their memories.

When in Tuaran, you can also try out the paragliding in Bukit Ruhiang.

For a slight cultural experience, you can go and visit the Linangkit Cultural Village.

An adventurous activity can also be found in Tuaran, which is White Water River Rafting.

Do not also forget to eat a refreshing local desert that can only be found in Tuaran, locals called it as Puding Kelapa Salut or Salut Coconut Pudding. To find this local desert, it is located only 20 minutes away from Tuaran which costs only MYR 4 per coconut.
