Seberang Perai was originally named Province Wellesley after Richard Wellesley which was the first Marquess Wellesley, the Governor of Madras and Governor-General of Bengal. Seberang Perai is located between two main important archaeological sites which are Bujang Valley and Sungai Selinsing. One of the areas in Seberang Perai is Simpang Ampat also known as Simpang Empat is a small town in the district of South Seberang Perai. It borders Bukit Mertajam town to the north, Junjung town to the east, Sungai Bakap town to the south, and Batu Kawan town to the west. Simpang Ampat here means the four-way junction in Bahasa Melayu and located in the Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency.

How to Get There

By Plane

Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines and Malindo Airlines connect Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Penang Airport at Bayan Lepas. It usually takes around 45 minutes and once you arrive, you can either take a bus and car to Simpang Ampat by using Penang Bridge road.

By Car

It takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur city centre to Simpang Ampat by using North- South highway.

Penang Bird Park

Established since 1988, the 5-acre park is located 25 minutes away from Simpang Ampat and has a collection of more than 300 species of birds from all over the world, of which more than 150 species are of Malaysian species. There are hornbills, sunbirds, pheasants and all the birds here are housed in more than 150 cages for breeding and conservation purpose. Besides birds, there are also various animals such as the estuarine crocodile, arapaima which is freshwater fish from the Amazon River in South America, 18 ft-long giant pythons, giant soft-shelled turtles and more than 20 timid leaf monkeys. There are free parking for all cars and coaches and entrance fee for adult is RM 10, children (below 12 year-old) is- RM 5, school Children with school uniform is RM2, camera is RM1, physically and/or mentally handicapped & under privileged persons are allowed free entrance. This place opens daily from 9.00am to 7.00pm including weekends and all public holidays.

Penang Street Art

Located around 40 minutes away from Simpang Ampat, there is a famous street art that can be found along Muntri streets. The artist which is known as Zacharevic had created its popular mural, the 20-foot high ‘Little Girl In Blue’, a mural of a young child dressed in ocean blue pyjamas flanked by the two real windows of its ‘canvas’. The second piece is called ‘Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur’ a funny coloured-image of a young child with an outline sketch of a dinosaur on a leash. Besides that, Zacharevic’s other designs include a piece named ‘Reaching Up’ on Cannon Street, a fresco of a young boy reaching up to a pot of real flowers on a window sill. In addition there is a painting along Armenian Street called ‘Little Children on a Bicycle’, which is similar to the ‘Boy on a Bike’, only instead of a motorbike, the prop is a bicycle. Found just down the road from Eastern & Oriental Hotel, brightly-coloured trishaws can take you to see unique artworks around Georgetown. Prices start at about RM80 for a one-hour ride but you can whittle it down to a mere RM40 for a 30-minute journey.
