Mount Jerai or previously known as Kedah Peak is located in Kedah state in Malaysia. This mountain has a height of 3854 feet or 1175 meters. Kuala Muda and Yan are separated by this mountain. It stands at the border of these two places. This mountain is made up of limestone.
There is a tale that mentioned that this mountain used to be an island called Serai Island. However, this was before the sea levels receded causing it to form into a mountain. A long time ago, due to the height of this mountain, it has become the navigational point for Indian traders and seafarers. This can be dated back up until 1500 years ago. Many considered this mountain as sacred hence the Hindu Buddhist built temples at the foothills up to the summit. The priest would pray for the safety of Bujang Valley.

One can take a local flight such as Air Asia or Malaysia Airlines and Firefly and fly to Alor Star which is the capital of Kedah. From there one may hire a taxi to go to Mount Jerai. It might cost a little as the distance is not that close.
One can drive from Kuala Lumpur using the North-South Expressway and head to Kedah. Then one can take the exit at Gurun to make their way to Mount Jerai. If someone wishes to drive up the mountain, it is highly advisable to go in a well-maintained car or jeep. The route can be rather hard therefore it might be a lot for an old car to handle. It is around 13 km from the foothill and the road are rather steep with sharp corners. Therefor any mistake can cause a catastrophic accident down the hill.
Of course, driving is not for everyone. Some may have a weaker heart to take up the challenge of driving up the mountain. Therefore, the locals offer a private van service at the foothill. This van will cost around RM80. However, if this is quite expensive, one can always opt for joining any existing van for RM 8 per passenger.
This is a free museum that exhibits the geological findings in the mountain. One will be able to see the actual build-up of the mountain. Besides that, one will also be able to see the flora and fauna that can be found there. It is always beneficial to be able to learn about poisonous snakes if one would make their way up the mountain. You might come across the species during the trek.
