A Famosa Fort is the fort built by the Portuguese conquerors as soon as they successfully taken over Melaka from the Sultanate of Melaka in 1511. During the time, it was formally known as the Fortaleza de Malaca or the fort of Melaka and took five months to build under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque using ruins from other destroyed buildings. It is located in Banda Hilir, nearby St Paul Church and Melaka Sultanate castle replica. The complete version is said to have four towers or bastion ranging from 2.4 meters to 4.5 meters high. In present, only the main door, Porta de Santiago survived the test of time, being maintained by the government and open to public. It is the oldest European architecture that is still left in Asia, others either have been destroyed due to natural occurrences or redevelopment purpose. In Portuguese, A Famosa is a phrase that literally means โthe famousโ.
It feels incomplete to talk about Melaka Raya without mentioning this place. This mosque is located on the man-made Melaka Island which can be immediately found upon entering Melaka Raya. It is one of the few floating mosques in the country, which is uniquely built to be seen as if it is floating during the rising tide. The mosque is officiated in 2006 by the twelfth King, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail at a cost of ten million ringgit. During festive seasons such as Eid Fitri and Eid Adha as well as the usual Friday prayers, the mosque is able to accommodate two thousand congregants at its maximum capacity. Visitors are advised to dress modestly if they intend to come over to grace upon the mosqueโs beautiful sight.
Another interesting place to visit when visitors are in Melaka Raya is the Jonker Night Street Market. Famously known among the locals as a shopping attraction, it is open on Fridays and Saturdays starting from early evening until late at night. It is in this night market that the local food of Melaka can be found in abundance as well as gifts and merchandises that can be purchased cheaply. There are also eateries nearby for dining in with family and friends.
