Dayang Bunting Island or the ‘Pregnant Maiden’ Island’ is the second largest island in Langkawi’s cluster islands. The island got its name from a famous folklore of a couple Mat Teja and princess Mambang Sari that fell in love by the lake and eventually got married. The princess then gave birth to a son but the son did not live long and soon died. They decided to lay their dead son to the bottom of the lake. Related to the tale is the contour of the hills that form the background of the said lake, from an angle, it looks like as if a woman is lying on her back with a bulging belly signifying that of a pregnant woman.

How to Get There

By Plane

Langkawi Island Airport is located at Padang Mat Sirat. There are flights to Langkawi provided by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. From the airport, guests may hail up a taxi to reach Langkasuka Port or Kuah Jetty and continues the journey to Dayang Bunting Island by taking a boat or ferry services.

By Boat or Ferry

Boat or ferry services to Dayang Bunting Island are available at the Langkasuka Port which is located at the Cenang Beach. Other option is to get on the boat or ferry services to Dayang Bunting Island at the Kuah Jetty. The journey to Dayang Bunting Island takes approximately 20 minutes on either trip.

Tasik Dayang Bunting

Tasik Dayang Bunting also known as Guillemard Lake is literally translated as the ‘Lake of the Pregnant Maiden’. This lake has been cited to be the location of the tale that form the name of Dayang Bunting Island. According to the previous story of the island’s name history, Tasik Dayang Bunting is the lake where the couple lay off their dead son and allow him to rest in peace. This is also the spot where the princess Mambang Sari blessed all barren women having difficulty in conceiving a child. It is believed that they would become fertile once taking a dip into the lake.

The Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park

This is one of the three geoparks of Langkawi featuring great limestone formations, marbles and other geological features. The park is home to several caves including the Banshee Cave. The park also covers the site of Tasik Dayang Bunting and its surrounding covering a boardwalk that leads to the ‘Miracle Border’ that shows the slim linings of the border between the lake and the ocean. The boardwalk also goes through the mangrove forest whereby guests may enjoy birdwatching as there are over than 90 species of birds including hornbills, kingfishers and woodpeckers. There are also opportunities for animals sighting such as monkeys and monitor lizards.

Cenang Beach

The public beach at the mainland of Langkawi Island, where the Langkasuka Port is located to transport visitors to Dayang Bunting Island. Cenang Beach is usually packed with beach-goers doing many beach activities and water sports. Swimming areas are clearly marked for the safety of jet-skiing activities not overlapping the fellow swimmers and snorkelers.
