The name Ayer Hangat or Air Hangat which in Malay is hot water taken for the presence of a hot water well in this mukim. According to legend, this mukim is believed to have been opened by a Malay-Thai population over 200 years ago. The communication language used by residents in this mukim was Siamese. Until now most of the population, especially the older generation, still use Siamese language as their intermediate language. The center of the attraction here is the three-tiered hot water spring wells. It is a natural saltwater hot spring which is rare and can be found only in three other countries in the world. The Air Hangat Village is a modern complex decked with an impressive three-tier fountain and an 18 metre high carved riverstone mural and has been upgraded recently after three years of renovation work. Apart from hot water being converted into three stages well, it now includes a Jacuzzi where natural hot salty water is pumped in small ponds and fountains in landscaped gardens. On top of that, there are cultural performances, restaurants, souvenirs and gift booths. The entrance fee for adults is RM5.00 and children under 12 are free whereas the opening hours are from 9 am to 5pm daily.
From KLIA to Langkawi International Airport, flights such as Air Asia, Malindo Air and Malaysia Airlines take around 55 minutes. Once you reach airport, you can take a taxi or rent a car to Ayer hangat area by using Ulu Melaka road which takes another 22 minutes.
The word Tanjung in Malay means a cape or a promontory, and Rhu stands for casuarina trees.
