Pasar Turi Railway Station in Surabaya

Pasar Turi Station is a high-class station and the second biggest railway station in Surabaya after Gubeng Station. It belongs to Operation Region VIII Surabaya and is on the border of Gundih and Tembok Dukuh, Bubutan-Surabaya. The station is located in Semarang 1 Street, Tembok Dukuh, Bubutan, Surabaya 60172. Pasar Turi Station lies in a strategic position as it is located near Surabaya Wholesale Center (Pusat Grosir Surabaya/PGS) that was popular by the name Pasar Turi. The station connects Surabaya to other cities in Pantura route, including Lamongan, Bojonegoro, Cepu, Semarang, Cirebon, and Jakarta. The most special feature that this station offers is its unique bell sound for train arrival. Instead of usual sound, Pasar Turi Station uses the instrumental version of the song entitled “Surabaya Oh Surabaya.”

The origin name of Pasar Turi

A long time ago, there was a traditional market occupied by a lot of merchants who sell turi flowers. Turi is ornamental shrub with white or red pea-like flowers. Turi trees grew largely around the market area, while the flower itself is often used as the main ingredient of peanut sauce for Javanese traditional foods. Turi Market or Pasar Turi (now Pusat Grosir Surabaya) is located near the station and because of that, inspire the station to acquire its name until today.

The origin name of Surabaya

Etymologically, the name “Surabaya” was originated from Sanskrit words; suro that means shark or courage, and boyo that means crocodile or danger. The combined word “Surabaya” can be translated as “courage in danger.” Another belief also stated that the name “Surabaya” came from a myth about the battle involving a shark (Suro) and a crocodile (Boyo) which once happened in the past.
