Gambir railway station, or more popularly known as “Jakbir” (stands for Jakarta Gambir), is the biggest railway station in the capital city of Indonesia. This station is located in Medan Merdeka Timur Street No. 1, Gambir, Central Jakarta, DKI Jakarta 10110. Its location is not far from Jakarta’s landmark, National Monument. In fact, through a special pathway from the monument, you can get into the station in only five-minute walking.
Gambir is a relic of the Dutch colonialism and has been existed in Jakarta since the 1930s. In 1990, the biggest renovation was carried out on this station, making it the first station to have fly tracks system at that time. Gambir station belongs to the Operation Region I of Jakarta and serves a variety of classes (Executive and other classes) in a train journey from other cities in Java.

Jakarta City
Jakarta is the capital city of DKI Jakarta Province and also the capital city of the country, Indonesia. It is the one and the only city in Indonesia to be treated in the same level as a province. Formerly known by the name Sunda Kelapa, this city is located in northwest part of Java Sea and has been the country’s trade and business center for centuries.

Gambir is the forerunner of modern railway station in Indonesia
Gambir railway station has developed well throughout its existence. It is the first station in Jakarta that applies check-in and boarding pass system for the passengers. Since late 2016, Gambir has provided a free wi-fi service at a speed of 1 Mbps in the station area and plans to provide the same service inside the train.
Moreover, Gambir station also offers Rail Transit Suite, a room-service facility intended for passengers in transit. It is located on the first floor in the southern area of the station. The facility includes 23 guest rooms with air conditioning, television, free wi-fi, and water heater in each room. The room is charged according to how long you stay, which is divided into two categories: short-term category for 6-8 hours and full-time category for 12-24 hours.
Jakarta, the city with hundred of malls
Jakarta the metropolitan is closely related to a multitude of malls as the city’s tourist attractions. It is understandable since the number of malls in Jakarta is quite fantastic. Until today, there are more than 180 malls around the city. The shopping centers cover about 450 hectares, or in comparison, it is about 5.6 times of the Merdeka field and National Monument area.

The capital city of Indonesia has changed its name for ten times before it is officially named as Jakarta. In the Dutch colonialism era, the city acquires its first name, Sunda Kelapa. Later, it changed to other three names before the Japanese colonialism took over. In the Japanese era, the city’s name is Tokubetsu Shi. The city’s name continued to change in several later years before the name of “Jakarta” was official in 1998.
