Blimey, it seems that the quaint neighbourhood of Jalan Besar is back on the radar guys! What a great new thing this is! With the increasing streams of cool hipster bars, cafes and coffee joints, all of which kindle back the sparks of soul that were long lost from this town. Indeed, Jalan Besar was once a sleepy monotonous town that has now undergone a complete 180o makeover. Today, it is becoming one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in Singapore. That’s why there are so many best hotels in Singapore that are included on the hotels in Jalan Besar list. Hot on the heels of Tiong Bahru, this town is steadily sealing its name and status as a splendid ‘lepak’ spot for foodies at heart.
Long before Jalan Besar was covered by swamps and rural patches, inhabited by wildlife, including ducks, snakes, fishes, birds and mud lobsters, this land was full of snipes that made it a favourite hunting ground. Slowly, this land was left to wither to its fate. But not until then, in the 1880s, did Jalan Besar emerge. Jalan Besar means ‘Large Road’ in Malay which was taken after a big road was constructed from the nipah land. Instead of being large, it is more of a ‘Main Road’, that’s the only one connecting Kallang and Rochor. Meanwhile, local Hoklos once called it ‘kam kong ka poh thai tu long’ which meant ‘the slaughter pig depot in Kampong Kapor’, referring to the abattoir in the vicinity.
While all these have long gone, time is still standing in pockets of this historic town with all the peculiar streets bearing the names of World War I British generals and admirals, for instance, Tyrwhitt, Kitchener and Foch. Later in 1923, the first amusement park called New World Amusement Park was built. People from all walks of life came seeking excitement like cabaret girls, opera shows, striptease and boxing matches, after a hard day’s work. Soon after a few decades operating, this park was shut down in 1987 as the business gradually overwhelmed by the rising shopping centres, discos and televisions in particular.
Despite a significant change of Jalan Besar, Singaporeans and tourists alike are still able to appreciate the juxtaposition of the old and new, as you can still spot some heritage sites and interesting newly developed landmarks at the same time. Get yourself ready to discover every nook and cranny of this neighbourhood!
