The bay is rich in marine products. In the Dutch colonial era, Kendari was the Capital of Citizenship and the capital of Onder Afdeling Laiwoi. Kendari City first grew as the Capital of the District and subsequently developed into the Capital of the Second Level Regional District based on Law Number 29 of 1959 with its development as a residential area, trade centre and inter-island seaport. The area of the city at that time was 31,400 km².

Previously, the name of the airport was taken from the name of Robert Wolter Monginsidi, the Indonesian national hero who was executed by the Dutch during the Indonesian National Revolution. Since 13 February 2010, the name of the airport was changed to honour the king of Konawe, namely Raja Halu Oleo. Haluoleo Airport has experienced several service improvements, particularly with the availability of Aerobridge facilities that make it easier for passengers to enter the airport's departure and arrival terminal area and to and from aircraft. The airport apron can accommodate up to eight narrow-Body aircraft of the same class as the Boeing 737-900ER or Airbus A320. With a budget approved by the Minister of Finance of, Haluoleo Airport has extended its runway from 2,500 meters to 2,800 meters in 2013. This is related to the increased frequency of flights and the use of the latest generation of Narrow-Body series aircraft used by several airlines such as Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia and Sriwijaya Air
