• Take a bus for medium or long-distance travel in Japan. It'll be cheaper than taking the trains. Daytime and overnight services are available depending on where you're going.
• You can get a discount when you purchase a roundtrip bus ticket, but only when your return trip is after six to ten days from when you arrived.
• Taking overnight buses is cheaper than one night's worth of accommodation.
• Tourists who will be visiting one more than one region should consider getting a Japan Rail Pass. This will give you unlimited nationwide travel on almost all trains operated by Japan Railways.
• Consider tour packages because they combine airfare and accommodation at low rates.
• Some of the attractions in Japan have exclusive discounts for foreigners, and some are even free. Include one of these in your itinerary and purchase passes like the Osaka Amazing Pass or Nikko Pass to avail of these discounts.
• If you want to go shopping, catch Japan's two major annual sales - one at the beginning of December and the other around June.
• Convenience stores have inexpensive meals from fresh sandwiches to sushi and lunch boxes. They're open 24 hours a day and can be found anywhere.
