Inaugurated in 2004, the Royal Selangor Visitor Center is a walk down memory lane through the rich history of Royal Selangor, once known as Selangor Pewter and its pewter craftsmanship. Located in Setapak Jaya which is just 20 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur City Center, upon entering the visitor centre, visitors would be greeted by a modern glass-clad foyer set within scenic lush landscaping.

Nearby is the Royal Selangor’s Giant Tankard which has received recognition as the world’s largest by the Guinness World of Records, being some of the spots providing excellent photo opportunities in the centre. The Visitor Center aims to bring the visitors back to the hundred years during the founding of Royal Selangor and its link to the history of Malaysia. This is achieved through complimentary guided tours, where visitors would be awed with the remarkable progress of the tin mining in the peninsula in the 1800s when it supplied fifty-five percent of the world’s tin. It is in 1885 that the Royal Selangor is opened and has since become a brand that exudes the quality of its design and craftsmanship, in which alloys of tin, copper and antimony are transformed into exquisite home utilities and gifts.

There is also a Pewter Museum nearby where traditional pewter smith tools, antique pewter and ancient tin currencies are put on display. Other sections include the Chamber of Chimes where there are large chimes and bells that can be struck to demonstrate the cast pewter sound, as well as the Hall of Frames where a vast collection of past and present Royal Selangor photo frames are gathered here. There is also a chance to go into the factory to oversee the processes of crafting the pewter goods, as well as trying to craft one using your own hands with nominal fees at the Royal Selangor’s School of Hard Knocks. Last but not least, there is a retail store comprising the widest selection of Royal Selangor goods that are up for sale and a café to unwind after a long day appreciating the pewter craft history.

How to Get There

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive via the Jalan Damansara and Sultan Iskandar Highway for immediate access to the Royal Selangor Visitor Center. The journey could take up to fifteen minutes depending on the traffic situation.

By Train

The closest train stations providing access to the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre is the Sri Rampai and Wangsa Maju stations located alongside Gombak LRT line. From the centralized KL Sentral station, take an LRT coach heading to Gombak and make a stop at the mentioned stations before opting for a taxi, local buses or shared ride services to reach the landmark.

P Ramlee Memorial

Opened in 1986 as a dedication to the renowned singer, composer, film actor, director and musician P Ramlee who died in 1973, the museum contains his awards, musical instruments, documents and personal artefacts as well as displays of the various films he has participated and directed. Since the museum is erected on his old house, most of the setup is preserved as is, plus there are also details of his life growing up in Penang.
