Gerik is a district capital in Hulu Perak District, Perak. The town as known by locals is Rest Town due to its strategic location next to the East-West Highway, which a link between Kedah and Penang to the east coast Kelantan and Terengganu.

Gerik was named by the local king named Raja Reman back in hundred years ago. The name was derived due to the noise made by the pencil-tailed tree mouse when they gnawed or in Bahasa Melayu known as “menggerit” at the bamboo. Later, the word “gerit” had been used and heard as “Gerik”. Thus, the place was named based on that noise sound.

Gerik is a small town located between the borderline of Southern Thailand and Perak. Gerik is located right next to the intersection of the East-West Highway. Gerik has different areas such as Batu Dua, Kuala Rui and the town itself, Gerik.

How to Get There

By Plane

There are flights to Ipoh from Kuala Lumpur as offered by MAS, AirAsia and Firefly. From the airport, travellers can take up taxi to Gerik which will take up 1 hour and 48 minutes.

By Car

Getting to Gerik can take up to 3 hours and 34 minutes of driving. Travellers can take the North-South Highway. Take exit on the Kuala Kangsar Tol Plaza and head on to Jalan Baling – Kuala Kangsar straight to Gerik.

By Bus

There are also buses that take passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Gerik using the same land route. The bus companies are Transnasional and Alisan Golden Coach.

In Perak, they also have their own dialect however; it depends on the region that they are at. If the locals are in northern region of Perak, such as Gerik, their dialect is mostly influenced by the Northern dialect.

Tourist Attractions

In Gerik, the most popular attraction in the town is the Royal Belum Rainforest. This tropical rainforest is a place for travellers who are looking for green adventure to Mother Nature. This place has 290,000 hectare of area and divided by upper and lower area. It is opened for tourists and visitors to also help the conservation of the forest. It is a great opportunity when you can appreciate the nature and at the same time and having fun when dipping in one of their waterfalls.

There are local night markets that usually open every Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the night market is located at Jalan Kuala Kendrong in Gerik town itself while on Saturday, it is located in the same location also.

There is an exotic delicacies being offered by the aborigines situated in Royal Belum Forest. They will offer rare dishes that are not to be found outside of the forest. The rice is cooked in bamboo stick and the same process also made to other dishes. The dishes were came from the Malay-Pattani people, it is influence from Malay and Thai cuisine.
