Gelugor is currently a university city that lies in the southern suburb area of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Gelugor got its name from a plant species known as “Gu – Lu – Gok” by the local Hokkien people. Gelugor is located at the eastern seaboard of Penang Island which is situated in between of Jelutong and Sungai Dua. It is around 5 km south of George Town.

The people there consists of the multi race exist in Malaysia therefore commonly the language used is Bahasa Melayu. However, the northern part of Malaysia, has their own dialect. It is still using the same language only it might take a little getting used to in order to understand the dialect added to the language.

How to Get There

By Plane

There are plenty of flights that lands in Penang. Some of the airlines that does are Malaysia Airline, Air Asia as well some of the domestic ones such as Firefly. Then the guests may hail up a taxi to get to Gelugor.

By Car

From Kuala Lumpur, one may drive to Gelugor by taking the North South Expressway. Then by taking the exit to Pulau Pinang, it will direct them on the Penang Bridge that will go directly into the city.

By Bus

There is a bus terminal in Gelugor itself. The Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal takes in buses from all over the Peninsular. There are many bus companies that offers a service to Pulau Pinang.

Tourist Attractions

Farlim Night Market

This night market is very close to Gelugor. Here you can find almost everything you need all in 1 go. It is held every Wednesday and starts at 7.30 pm. The number of stalls are vast with a good variety of food, household items and also accessories. Not to mention it also has a live band to entertain those who is doing their shopping.

Penang Hill

Penang Hill or also known as Bukit Bendera is a hill that consists of several other hills where the highest point is at the Western Hill. The height is at 833 metres above sea level. Previously it was a retreat used during the British colonial era however now it is a tourist attraction where people come to look at the view of the whole island.

Kek Lok Si Temple

Kek Lok Si Temple is a hilltop temple with any intricate statues of Buddha images. Many of the believers comes here to pray. It is also a tourist attraction as it is a beautiful park that oversees the whole island. It is right next to the Penang Hill.
