Ketut's One-Wok Shop
"Warung Sedap Wangi" is promoted as a "Masakan Khas Medan" on their sign. This means they cook and serve typical Medan Sumatera style food in this warung or cooking stall. I don't know if this is true or not. I have never encountered food like this in Medan where I have lived on and off for over 25 years. What I do know is that Chef Ketut cooks some of the freshest and most delicious food I have ever encountered. He has travelled and trained in Taiwan and this would explain the Chinese influence in his cooking. He is the nicest and friendliest guy you would ever wish to meet and I for one believe his wok is magical. There is nothing fancy about this warung, but when I am in Bali, I try to eat at least one meal a day here. I sometimes wish I could pack Chef Ketut in my suitcase and take him wherever I go. If you are squeamish about all types of food being prepared in one wok or a purist, this may not be the place for you. However, if you are adventurous and love to eat, you cannot go wrong. You can get strictly vegetarian food, food with eggs, and all kinds of meat dishes. Give the chef a days notice and he will even prepare your personal request. The service is very casual, but friendly and prompt. Though their service changes on occasion, Ketut is a permanent fixture, and the guy that makes it happen. Most importantly for you rice lovers, their steamed rice is always perfect. Be sure and go, meet the cook, make new friends, and discover your own favorites. You won't be disappointed!
