I dunno. The food was good, but ... excellent? I wanted some good seafood, I saw the reviews on Trip Advisor, I checked the location, I saw that it was an easy walk from the hotel. I went. It isn't "down an alley". It's about 300 meters off Jalan Raya Legian, one of the busy streets in Kuta, directly on the very busy Jalan Patimura. I ordered fresh grilled red snapper (market price) with chili sauce. I had onion rings, steamed rice, and two beers, too. The total bill was IDR 225,000. That's cheap. Everything was fine. The onion rings were crispy and nice and came served on a banana leaf with a ramekin of mayonnaise-like dip. The beers were ice cold. The fish is fresh. The catch of the day is kept iced in a bin at the entrance next to the open-air grill. The whole snapper was butterflied and rubbed with chili, garlic and ginger, and grilled over coals and served with a fiery sambal chili sauce on the side. It was good. I saw all the superlatives, but in my opinion Warung Malang is really only just another typical warung-style eatery. There was nothing I saw that made it exceptional in any way. Don't get me wrong, the food is good. It's cheap. The place is simple, there's nuthin' fancy about it. It's also very, very loud. You can get a good meal here and I'd go back again. I'd even recommend it, too. But, "great", "excellent", "best", "amazing" ... eh, ... I don't think so.
