Unexpected gem near Bangli bemo stop
We found this place after asking locals for a decent 'warung' for lunch - it was around 300m west of the town centre down a quiet street called Jalan Lettu Anom. At first sight the little place we found didn't look too promising -- it was empty at 2pm on a weekday afternoon but we soon found the owner and her two daughters in a tiny kitchen past half a dozen tables and chairs. They seemed surprised to have any customers but my friend and I eventually managed to order 'nasi campur' (the standard mixed rice dish) with 'mujair' fish (a kind of freshwater tilapia my research tells me...). We weren't expecting much but what was rustled up in 15 minutes or so was probably the best meal of my three weeks in Indonesia. The rice was perfectly steamed and served on a banana leaf with the fish grilled on a barbecue and served with a spicy peanut sauce. It came with with delicious water spinach cooked with plenty of garlic. To top it off the bill came to a grand total of 20,000 rupiah (about £1.30) between us. The owner and her two daughters were really welcoming so if you're ever lost and hungry in Bangli they deserve your business!
