Time well spent with sushi and friends
Sushi Tei is one of my favorite Japanese restaurant in Surabaya. Last week I went there with my friends. I ordered its most famous dish, Aburi Salmon Roll, containing crab meat, avocado, and omelette sushi roll topped with half broiled salmon. It's very delicious although it's a little bit overpriced and the atmosphere was really relaxing. The waitress were very friendly and even every guest was greeted with Japanese greeting. I would recommend it as a place to have dinner with friends and family.

ST used to be excellent a few years back. But now as many of you may notice, the food quality are compromised and downgraded to match the mass market. Sake Sashimi were tasteless and the maguro toro were bitter as if they were CO treated. Sorry to say but it's really pathetic. The staff were less than friendly. In fact one of them were fidgeting with his cellphone when I asked him to add my ocha. My last visit. Never again.

Sushi Tei Pakuwon Mall, fine dining price but PKL quality food
in a changing world of this era where people who live in big cities and have busier life, more and more people choose to eat out instead of cooking their own lunch and dinner also putting less emphasis on quality food. this creates opportunities and chances to profit from the enormous demand for restaurant, from the cheap ones to fine dining. in surabaya, who grows population significantly during the last decade, from expats and other cities, the city ever increasing for hang out and eating places, may stir some the normally busy restaurants, to "improvise". sushi tei in general, WAS a good decent fine dining place, and have branches in singapore too, so quite a well known eatery. but recently, it gets worse, so i need to share this fact with fellow restaurant goers. ive been eating tofu and fish my whole life, so i can tell the lousy ones from the good ones, and sushi tei surabaya, overall, has been degrading the quality of its own raw materials, and combined with so many frozen and well advanced prepared food, made me sick of these greedy/ignorant/careless owners. for instance, the agedashi tofu and kara age chicken, which i always eat at sushi tei, goes from hero to zero. i remember on the opening days, it was a joy to eat, using the finest quality and ingredients, served fresh, and definitely a fair trade with your hard earned cash. recently, it was the worst tofu and chicken i ever eat in fine dining restaurants. but in my dismay, i cant believe people are still lining up at sushi tei restaurants as if they are the best japanese restaurants in the world. tofu was rather sour and the fried part was tough to chew, an indicator of cheap material and frozen stuff. it is hard to digest why a reputable resto like sushi tei would stoop so low just in the name of efficiencies and profit. and j beg to differ if this case was just incidental because i ate there 3 times just to prove this is not a fluke. maybe someday, surabaya will have a good japanese restaurants, maybe someday surabaya restaurant goers would be more educated on quality food, more picky with freshness, and more literate on japanese dining. but for now, all these greedy/ignorant/careless owners can enjoy the short cut they take while it lasts.
