Miss the old Shang Palace ambience...
Recently had lunch at the Shang Palace Chinese restaurant, at the ShangriLa Hotel, Jakarta. This used to be a favourite restaurant of mine as it had traditional Chinese decor, plush carpet, female staff wearing cheong sam dresses, and the ambience was lovely - peaceful, soft music and a great place to have delicious Chinese food, in a quiet atmosphere. Now this restaurant is ultra modern - no carpet, hard chairs, which scrape the floor when moved, and an atmosphere like grand central station!! It seems that the new decor and set up are to attract a younger market. However, it was disappointing as the restaurant was very noisy, the food took a long time to come, and it was nothing special. Service was also very matter of fact. Times change...

Chinese dish buffet
Went there for brunch with brother and sister. Dessert bar was okay, at first quite disappointing, until they served the mango pudding. Variety of food was okay. Taste wise was average. No mantao with egg yolk filling available. A bit disappointing since I wondered how it would taste in a fancy Chinese restaurant in a fancy hotel.

Shang Palace, the Chinese restaurant situated in Shangri-La, Jakarta is a delight to dine in. I enjoyed lunch and dinner on two occasions and came back very happy. The staff is very courteous and one didn't have to wait long for the ordered dishes to materialise. When a fried egg atop a dish of noodles was mistakenly delivered with scrambled eggs, it was replaced within seconds with an apology and a smile. The dishes ere excellent too
