Words can’t express...
... my loathing for this restaurant. Sage and I did not get on. As a result it gets the dubious accolade of my 2nd 1 star review in around 6 years of using TA. As a long time vegetarian and a big fan of vegan and raw food, I was pretty excited to try this place. Went for dinner on a Saturday evening - possibly our first mistake, it is maybe more a lunchtime place. We arrived at 7.30pm, by which time they had already run out of quite a few dishes. Ok, I guess that happens (that said, how do you “run out” of summer rolls? They’re not hard to make?) though it was pretty packed so you’d have thought they’d plan better for busy times. Staff seemed surly and resentful, which I could kind of understand - the place was stuffed with tourists all trying to live their/our Best Ubud Life. It all felt terribly colonial. I hated myself a bit just for being there. It was hot and stuffy and we had to ask 3 times for water (which was then grumpily plonked down by our unhappy server). I ordered one of the specials, a mushroom rendang. Full disclosure - I’ve never had rendang before (it usually has beef in it) so this could have been my poor choice and this is how it’s meant to be, but it was basically a tasteless bowl of thick creamy paste with a few veg in it. I’ve eaten and cooked coconut milk and cream based dishes many times and this was singularly bland and unimpressive. My husband had a burger, which was actually pretty good. We considered dessert but most of them seemed to be finished so we gave it up as a bad job. The restaurant seemed reluctant to help us book a taxi, so we walked in the dark along the busy road until we found one. My advice would be to go across the road to the warung and get delicious nasi goreng for a fraction of the price instead.

Coconut cake is a must try!
I confess, I am an absolute fan of their Coconut Cake! It is very moist and unlike anything you have tried before. The nourish bowl is another of my favorite dishes. The setup of the restaurant is nice but I have noticed that it gets very hot in the afternoons and somehow uncomfortable when you are enjoying a meal. The service is a little bit slow and sometimes it seems that the waiters are in another world.

I was fortunate enough to be out with my partner and her kids and we went to Sage. Beautiful food, happy smiling staff and a really great atmosphere to the restaurant. The prices were good and the quality was amazing I would recommend you taste the delights at Sage in Ubud. I'd love to revisit the restaurant on my return visit. Yum..
