Restoran khas Sunda

My family and I went to Sapulidi Restaurant at Jln Cihampelas on our first day in Bandung on 5 June 2013. We were on the way to Tangkuban Perahu and wanted to stop for lunch. From our villa we had to pass Jln Cihampelas and we came across the restaurant. I have heard/ read good reviews about the restaurant but it was the one on Jln Sersan Bajuri. But at the time it was unanimous that we ate there as we were hungry as we only had very light breakfast because of our early flight. Our first impression of the restaurant was the decor which was rather old and dusty. And even though it was lunchtime, the restaurant was not well patronized. We ordered "Ayam Warisan", Keledok, Fried Kangkong, Fried Cumi, gurame goreng and sayur asem. Unfortunately, the sayur asem was "kosong" so we switched to sop buntut. For drinks we ordered air jeruk. The food arrived about half and hour later. Note that Indonesian chickens (ayam kampung) were small and bony. There was not much flesh on the chicken. The Ayam Warisan was good and we had to place another order for it. The Keledok (a gado-gado like dish) was very nice and the vegetables were crunchy. The fried Cumi was passable, the gurame was nothing to shout out for and so was the fried kangkong and sop buntut. All and all we had a filing lunch but nothing memorable. A friend hosted dinner for us at the same Sapulidi Restaurant on another day. This time we were a bit more impressed with the food. May be because it was night and the lights were not too strong, but the place looks better than it looked in the light of day. It was also more crowded. Our hostess ordered soto, nila pepes, nila bakar, nila goreng and smoked fried chicken. Dinner tasted much better then lunch. The Nila fish was better than the gurame especially the pepes. Dessert consisted of Sekotang which was a porridge-like concoction containing ginger, atapchee, nuts and croutons. It tasted "different" but was alright. Service was a bit slow and the waiter also tipped a glass of tea on my lap! Luckily it was not boiling hot and was sugar-free. I reacted fast and jumped out of the way. Still the lower part of my trousers were drenched. Bottom line the restaurant was ok. Price was reasonable. Fish was fresh. Maybe the Jalan Sarsan Bajuri branch was better but I wouldn't know since we did not have a chance to go there.
