A Decent Steak in Jakarta
Anyone who has tried to find a good steak in Indonesia knows that it is a losing battle. If you can find one that is not translucent, then it is overcooked to the point of being completely flavorless and lifeless. One notable exception to the rule is Meat Me. My wife and I recently enjoyed a New York Strip and Tenderloin at the Kota Kasablanka restaurant. I had the strip, ordered medium rare, with mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes. My wife had the tenderloin medium well (she's Indonesian), also with mashed potatoes and the black pepper sauce. Being a native Texan, I am highly critical of steaks. That said, the strip was not bad. It had a little thickness to it and was a healthy 200g before cooking. Thankfully, the sauce was served in a small cup on the side, and not slathered all over my steak, which is the norm here. Unfortunately, it was cooked medium and not medium rare - a common problem here, since Indonesians never eat meat that is not cooked to within in inch of charcoal. The strip was properly cut and reasonably tender with a definite aged flavor. It had the obligatory bit of fat attached at the heel, and did not taste like a pre-grilled, microwaved steak, which is also a common problem with imported steaks here. Since I didn't drown my steak with the sauce, I was able to enjoy the full flavor, which was quite good, despite being over-cooked for my tastes. I tried a couple of bites of my wife's tenderloin, but I confess that having it cooked medium well prejudiced me against it. The cut was correct and it came in a 180g portion with decent thickness, which I appreciated. Despite being way over-cooked, it was still juicy, though dead and flavorless to my tastes. The side dishes were nice, if not stellar. The garlic mashed potatoes were obviously machine prepared without the chunkiness of hand-prepared, but they had a good flavor and consistency, even with the mushroom sauce that I used instead of on my steak. The meals included a small side salad that was uninspired, but still a nice addition to the other flavors. On a previous visit, I enjoyed the mixed sausage platter, where one can select from a variety in the butcher counter at the entrance.. The sausage selection includes beef, lamb and pork. I tried one of each and was delighted to have such good bangers in a land full of flavorless chicken sausage and bereft of pork. Spicy mustard is available on request, but not automatically served. The service was slow and inattentive. We had to ask for menus, then flag down a server to take our order, and when we were finished, we gave up waiting on the bill and walked up to the cashier. Overall, it was a good experience at a good price for decent steaks. We will go back, though I hope the service issue is resolved. We might have ordered dessert if someone had bothered to ask. I also hope the cooks can take remedial training in how to cook steaks. Medium rare means warm red center, not pink. If I can get a medium rare done right, I might raise my hopes of getting a real rare steak, the way God intended them to be.

Just an average steakhouse
I went to Meat Me for lunch with my co-workers. For me, the steak had an average taste. The good side is, the restaurant has a good ambiance and suitable if you want to hangout with your friends.
