We really loved this restaurant, the food was beautiful and the setting even better. Set in the gardens of the amazing St Regis hotel. The meal was delicious with it set in a sharing style in the middle of the table. We even try Indonesia Rose' wine for something different and it impressed us as well. We were staying at the St Regis but if you are not you are still welcome. It is well worth a visit!

A Special Indonesian Dinner Experience
Dulang means large round wooden food tray, and this dinner certainly exceeded all our expectations. We stayed in a nearby boutique hotel and were immediately impressed by the huge opulence of the St Regis Hotel, where the Dulang Restaurant is nestled in a distant corner of their expansive gardens. Structured like a village meeting space (a bale’) in a grand style with largely open walls, the garden atmosphere pervades. It seats 24 so is very intimate. We were greeted by the staff and the music of the two gamelon players at the front step and the friendly but attentive service continued throughout the evening. This is not a dinner to be taken lightly, or to try to fit in with other things! It is it’s own experience and should be savored without external distraction and with plenty of time. There are about 10 main dishes and 5 deserts. This might seem overwhelming but each is tapas-sized and doable over time. After introductory cool towel, kerupuk (crisps and sambal) and drink, the mains dishes are brought to your table on a Dulang (of course!) and each dish is explained. Most dishes are mild, but the fried chicken was spicy. Our advice is to go easy on the rice and relax. Enjoy each mouthful. Although rice is central to the rijs tafel concept, it is an accompaniment, not the main event. This is after all, a feast, not a warung-style snack. After a break, the desert platters come out together on another Dulang. These are headlined by the Es Campur (mixed sweet fruit and jelly drink). We picked at these but tasted each one. Finally the Kopi Lumak is percolated at the table. This is strong and usually had black and unsweetened. I must confess, after tasting its special flavor that way, our western taste demanded some sugar. This, of course, changed its taste closer to what we would expect from coffee. We bought a bottle of wine ($Aud70) but would have done just as well with water or tea, or kelapa muda (coconut water). The $70 a head cost for the meal was very much worth it, as it was truly a culinary experience. An insider tip: sign up to the Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty program before you book for a 10% discount. This leaves you with a little extra to give your waiter as a well-deserved tip.

We came here for our first night of our honeymoon and it was PERFECTION. The food and service was wonderful. The tasting menu was a perfect introduction to Indonesian food and left us craving more. The only downside was that our jet lag got the best of us, especially with the live music. It was so soothing that we nearly fell asleep!
