This is a large bamboo house, with rows of little food warungs at the sides. I was here with friends on a Saturday evening and we expected quite a few people to be there. Actually, however, it was nearly empty and some of the food stalls were completely deserted. The food that was there was quite nice, local and relatively cheap for Jakarta standards. there was a karaoke stand as well, so I assume at other times there might actually be more buzz. The food sellers were also really friendly.

Authentic, simple and inexpensive
This is a food court with twenty stalls each specializing in one or a few Indonesian dishes. My favorite is Aceh mie goreng udang--white noodles in a spicy, coconut milk gravy with tiny prawn. The sambal (chili sauce) is served on the side with other condiments: sliced lime, onion, goreng (fried onion bits) and cucumber. The spicy fish soups (sota) and another favorite. you can get fresh citron and orange juices, whole small fish, nasi (rice) and a host of breads. The food garden is open-sided thatched roof and lunchtime is a buzz of government employees and other office folk. It's around the corner from Jalan Jaksa (backpacker heaven) and only a block from the president's residence. If you pass Daoen Sirih, you have missed a treat of well-prepared, wonderfully authentic Indonesian food--very inexpensive, too.
