Very Good Cafe and a Most Unusually Knowledgable and Helpful Chef-Owner
My wife and I ate here this evening as the cafe is close to our hotel and it was our last night. We'd also read the very good reviews this restaurant has received from tripadvisor patrons; interestingly the restaurant has some of the tripadvisor certificates for excellence pinned up on the wall. 2 day cafe is a very pleasant space and the menu offers a wide selection of mostly Indonesian dishes at decent prices (with tax and service included in the menu prices). We were not that hungry so opted for a couple of the simpler dishes. my wife's mee goreng was very good - especially once she added some hot sauce. I ordered Beef Rendang, one of my favorite Indonesian/Malaysian preparations. When it arrived I was surprised at how wet this dish was; it looked more like a soup with beef chunks than the Rendang I am used to eating. The beef, though was beautifully tender. We spoke with the delightful and very knowledgable chef/owner who explained that Beef Rendang is, indeed, normally a dry or semi-moist dish but this required many more hours of preparation than he could afford and in any case his customers preferred dishes that were more liquid. He agreed that this was a pity. My sense was that he is underestimating the sophistication of many of the people who visit Bali. We had a very pleasant chat about other aspects of Indonesian cooking and if the restaurant is not too busy I'd strongly urge customers to have a talk with him. You'll certainly come away knowing a great deal more about local cuisine. The desserts were very good; my wife's black rice pudding dessert and my simple plate of sliced fruit. We'll certainly be back on our next visit and we'll make sure to order some of the larger, more complex dishes that we saw on the menu. A clean bathroom/toilet, very pleasant wait staff and good food at reasonable prices; what else can one ask for?
