Qantas: An Introduction

Established in November 1920, Qantas is one of the founders of oneworld® alliance—the third largest airline alliance in the world. The airline is registered as a limited company under the same name, Qantas, which is an acronym of Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services. Being one of the oldest airlines, Qantas currently serves flights to 150 destinations across all continents. Qantas offers flights in four different classes, which are Economy Class, Premium Economy Class, Business Class, and First Class.

Economy Class

Unlike most economy class cabins, Qantas provides a more ample legroom in its Economy Class. With its ergonomically-designed seats, Qantas offers a comfortable trip for their passengers. Each seat is equipped with lumbar and foot support to make sure passengers feel relaxed throughout the flight. Passengers can also enjoy a wide range of movies and television programs, music, or games.

In-flight Meal

Passengers in the Economy Class can order their meal online, since 12 hours prior to departure. A selection of quality snacks and refreshment are also ready to be served onboard, such as Bickford’s and Maltesers.

Premium Economy Class

Premium Economy Class passengers are privileged for priority check-in at dedicated check-in counters and priority access to a dedicated boarding lane. The seats in the Premium Economy Class cabin were designed by Marc Newson and made by Recaro, featuring more comfort with adjustable height and footrest. Each seat is completed with hundreds of entertainments, from movies, television programs, interactive games, to radio channels. To add more to their comfort, passengers can also request for an amenity kit, containing eyeshades, toothbrush, and socks.

In-flight Meal

Qantas contemporary dishes are inspired by Rockpool and specially designed by its chef and founder, Neil Perry. Qantas’ Premium Economy Class presents a range of quality wine and champagne, with recommendations by an experienced sommelier.

Business Class

Qantas provides a Chauffeur Drive service, which will pick up its Business Class passengers to or from the airport. Inside the Business Class cabin, seats are made to with Skybed technology to provide more comfort, equipped with an adjustable reclining seat that can be transformed into a 2-meter bed and a massage option. A 12-inch screen will accompany passengers throughout the flight, providing interactive entertainments such as television program, movies, destination map, and games.

In-flight Meal

Business Class passengers can enjoy a variety of luxurious meals designed by Rockpool, each made with high-quality ingredients and prepared with care. For shorter flights around Asia and Australia, Qantas also offers simpler breakfast choices with faster service.

First Class

Qantas’ First Class service offers the ultimate comfort, beginning from the departure lounge to the moment of arrival at the passenger’s destination. During the flight, passengers will be pampered with fully reclining seat, completed with comfortable duvet and pillow made of quality sheep's skin. With more than 1,500 choices of interactive entertainments, Qantas makes sure that its passengers would not get bored throughout the flight. The suites in the First Class are also equipped with an 110-volt electricity plug if passengers need to charge their smartphone or laptop.

Qantas offers restaurant-quality meals for its First Class passengers Designed by a professional chef, Neil Perry, Qantas serves a set of 8-course meal that tantalizes the palate. Lines of award-winning wine and champagne will also be served to complement the dining experience.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Qantas' frequent flyer program invites its member to join and collect miles, which can be redeemed for a variety of privileges offered by oneworld® alliance and its partners. Qantas Frequent Flyer membership is divided into three tiers, which are are Silver Status, Gold Status, and Platinum Status. The accumulated mileage and flight spending will be converted to Status Credits, which determines the membership tiers and therefore, the privileges members will get to enjoy. Members will also earn Qantas Points every time they fly with Qantas or other partner airlines, use the services of partner banks and credit cards, or shop at partner merchants. Qantas Points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, such as flight tickets, flight upgrade, or to shop at Qantas Store.

Qantas In-flight Crew

Created by Martin Grant, a top Australian designer, Qantas’ flight attendant uniform features a stylish and modern design. This new uniform is introduced in April 2013, with Miranda Kerr as its ambassador. The female flight attendants wear a bodycon dress with diagonal lines on the chest and shoulder, featuring the colors navy blue, red, and fuchsia pink. The dominating dark color, navy blue, represents punctuality and excellence, yet combined with red and fuchsia to symbolize efficiency and hospitality. s female flight attendants, the uniform is complemented by a fuchsia scarf on the neck. While for the male flight attendant, the uniform features a navy blue suit with a fuchsia accent on the tie.

Qantas Passenger Policy

Infant Passenger Policy (0-2 Years Old)

  • Infants younger than seven days are not allowed onboard. If the infant requires to travel, the infant’s parents must fill a Clearance Form and Medical Form and return it to Qantas before booking.
  • Domestic flight passengers with an infant are allowed to put their baby on their lap, and therefore the infant is not required to buy a ticket.
  • Infants using a bassinet or special baby seat should buy a ticket and choose the preferable seating.
  • Infants purchasing a ticket have the same amount of baggage allowance as adult passengers, which can be used to carry strollers, bassinets, and car seats.
  • Infants purchasing a ticket can order baby meals.
  • Liquids such as formula milk, breast milk, mineral water, juice, liquid food, and disposable wipes are allowed in the cabin, as well as solid and powdered food.

Child Passenger Policy (2-12 Years Old)

  • Children between 2–18 years old has the same privilege as adult passengers unless they travel alone.
  • Qantas allows children between 5–11 years old to travel alone with special clearance. Such passengers will be considered as Unaccompanied Child, which also includes children sitting in a separated cabin with their parents.
  • Qantas provides Unaccompanied Child services that provide guidance and supervision throughout the travel, which must be requested by the parents or guardian and entails an additional cost.
  • Children older than 11 years old may travel alone but will be listed as Young Passenger.
  • Young Passenger does not need special guidance and supervision while traveling but needs to be identified in case of delay or disruption.
  • Children who need to carry medication are required to bring a medical recommendation and must be able to administer the medication by themselves.
  • Parents or guardian as the main contact should always be available to be contacted through travel and arrival time.

Pregnant Passenger Policy

  • Passengers with a pregnancy of 28 weeks or above should bring a medical recommendation from a doctor or midwife, which states the expected day of delivery, the condition of pregnancy, and whether it is single or multiple pregnancies.
  • Passengers without complication in their pregnancy may be allowed in flights lasting for more than 4 hours, with a pregnancy of no more than 40 weeks (single pregnancy) or 36 weeks (multiple pregnancies).
  • Passengers with complications in their pregnancy are only allowed in flights lasting for 4 hours or less, with a pregnancy of no more than 36 weeks (single pregnancy) or 32 weeks (multiple pregnancies).
  • Pregnant passengers with certain complications should bring a medical clearance issued by a health institution.

Disabled Passenger Policy

  • Qantas allows passengers with disabilities to carry assistance devices and mobility aids such as the following:
    • Assistance devices, which includes all kinds of devices that would help passengers with disabilities to walk, see, hear, talk, breathe, or carry out their disabled functions.
    • Mobility aids, which includes mobility aids with battery such as electric wheelchairs and Segway boards, or mobility aids without battery such as manual wheelchairs.
  • Passengers with disabilities are allowed to a bring service dog with a certain size.
  • Passengers with any kind of particular condition need to be registered.
  • Passengers with disabilities are required to provide a recommendation letter from a health institution.
  • Passengers with disabilities are required to complete clearance forms regarding the passenger’s condition and special needs during the flight.
