Điện Biên, sometimes named Dien Bien Phu is a town in the north-western province of Vietnam. It is the capital of Điện Biên Region. The city is best known for the events which happened there during the First Indochina War, the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ, during which the area was a breadbasket for the Việt Minh. The city was previously called Thaeng. Điện Biên Phủ rests in Mường Thanh Valley, 21 kilometres (12 mi) long and 6.1 kilometres (3.7 mi) wide sink sometimes called as "heart-shaped." It is on the western edge of Điện Biên Region, of which it is the capital, and is only about 10.1 kilometres (6.2 mi) from the border with Laos.
