Padang Terap is one district and also a parliamentary constituency in Kedah. It covers an area of 1327 km2. It has a total of 11 administrative divisions or mukims. There are not many attraction points in Padang Terap. The one and famous is Pedu Lake. Pedu Lake is a man-made lake located in Padang Terap District. This huge lake covers an area of 75 km².

Since the majority ethnic group inhabited in Padang Terap is Malay, the local language spoken is Malay language. However, there is also a number of Siamese in that area. Therefore it is not a surprise to see some of the people there speak Thai language.

How to Get There

By Plane

From KLIA2 or Subang Airport, take a flight to Alor Setar, Kedah. From the airport, tourists can ride a cab to Padang Terap.

By Bus

From Kuala Lumpur, either TBS (Integrated Bus Terminal) or Hentian Duta, take a bus straight to Kuala Nerang.

Public transports such as cab or bus are still operated in the district. However, it is recommended for tourists to rent a car when planning to explore Padang Terap.

Mount Jerai

Mount Jerai is the highest peak in Kedah. At the top of the mountain, there are beautiful gardens, resort and restaurants. Tourists will also get to read the history of Mount Jerai from the information board up there. The height of Mount Jerai allowed Indian traders and seafarers to use the mountain as a navigational point more than 1500 years ago. The mountain was considered sacred by the ancient who practised Hindu-Buddhist religion, so they built temples from the foothills up to the summit, known as Bujang Valley.

Bujang Valley

It is not only a Hindu-Buddhist temple, yet it is the richest archaeological site in Malaysia. There were prominently archaeologists from UKM and UM, who did their researches here. From the researches, they succeeded to reveal about periodization of this Bujang Valley as well as a process of indigenisation of Indian Culture in this area. Presently, a number of new researchers are being trained in local and foreign universities to continue the research in Bujang Valley. This shows how important this place is to our history. The Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum is also located here that displays some artefacts from the Bujang Valley.

Among the popular food here are; Char Kueh Teow, Nasi Kandar Royal and few more.

People in Padang Terap may speak Malay language with their own dialect. Therefore, there will be some communication barriers.
