On the eastern side of Tugu Station, you can find a unique crossing, a sliding gate that crosses Malioboro Street. There are also some guardhouses number 3A and 3B which are specifically provided for bicycles, pedicabs, horse carriages, and pedestrians that need to cross the street.
The architectural design of Tugu Station
Tugu station that was built in 1887 has a quite unusual design. Applying the concept of two-side station, the station building lies between railroad platform and railway track. Meanwhile, the main part of the station faces east to Margo Utomo Street, the city’s pivotal point.
Another unique design of Tugu Station is the station’s waiting room. The classic-style waiting room is placed inside an attached open veranda called pendopo. To add the traditional ambiance, the waiting room is also equipped with wooden round tables and chairs that are usually placed in Keraton Yogyakarta.
