Getting Around Sydney

A guide to Sydney's local transportation

Bus

Ferry

Trains are the easiest transportation to use in Sydney, as the routes cover almost all parts of the city. There are around 164 train stations throughout Sydney, from north (Richmond) to south (Helensbrugh) and west (Emu Plains) to east (Bondi Junction). Train fares will be subject to distance, payment methods, and special fare conditions (e.g., for seniors). Before taking the train in Sydney, we recommend downloading the Opal Travel app to check train fares and distances. You can also pay for your train tickets through this application. It's easy, right?

Practical Tips for Sydney

Things to prepare and best way to visit

What should and shouldn’t tourists do?

Tourists visiting Sydney should never forget sunscreen (don't say we didn't warn you!) This is something that anyone can never stress enough to new visitors. Also, you should observe the customs of city-goers and other locals around you such as how they approach or avoid some areas of the beach during certain times depending on the signs. Please also keep in mind to follow storm alerts and other public safety warnings. Do not approach wild animals even if they look friendly or in captivity. The rest are just common decency such as not littering, not smoking in non-smoking areas, and not being rude to service workers.

Is 3 days enough to visit Sydney?

Three days can be enough to explore the landmarks of the glorious city while also seeing some nature and wildlife. Well-known spots such as the famous Opera House along with the harbour area (Sydney Observatory, Harbour Bridge, Sydney Fish Market and Darling Harbour) can mostly be enjoyed in one day. A separate day dedicated to beachfronts during the summer is sufficient time but you might not need it if you're visiting during cold months (around June). Other attractions that tourists love like Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Taronga Zoo, and Art Gallery of New South Wales can take up another day. If you plan to visit natural sites out of the city, you might need more time.

How long does it take to get from Melbourne to Sydney by train?

It takes about 11 hours by train from Sydney to Melbourne or the other way around. There are 2 trains a day.

What is an Opal Card and what can I use it for?

Opal Card is a top-up card used for public transport instead of cash. You can use the card for trains, buses, and ferries. You can add money to it online or via its app, at designated counters in the city, at the airport, and at top-up machines near train stations.
