Standing on a hill at an altitude of about 195 meters above sea level, Ratu Boko is not a temple. Completed around the 9th century, this archaeological site was once a magnificent palace, and legend has it that Ratu Boko was the palace of Lara Jonggrang's father.
While construction first began under the Buddhist Syailendra dynasty, Hindu Mataram kings soon took over, making Ratu Boko Palace a blend of Buddhist and Hindu architectural influences. From here, you can see the nearby Prambanan Temple standing against Mount Merapi in the background, which is definitely worth a visit if you're around the area!
